Washington Practice Management is a medical practice management company started in 1993. The service includes medical coding and billing. A local defense attorney in 2004 asked if we could examine medical bills and comment on reasonableness. That started our entry into the expert witness world.

Reviewing medical bills, writing reports and giving testimony evolved over time. Different methodologies have been used including statistical comparisons and use of percentiles when comparing charges locally, regionally and nationally.

Medical expense testimony has long been complicated by the collateral source rule. It became apparent that using fair market value analysis was the preferred approach and avoided the collateral source rule since the amount paid is not considered. So far, our reports have not been excluded in over 125 cases. These reports have been used in state and Federal courts.
